About Iain.

Iain Bayne is a Scottish drummer known for his long tenure as the drummer and percussionist of the Celtic rock band Runrig from 1980 until the group's final performances in 2018.

Born on 22 January 1960 in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, Iain began playing drums at an early age and received formal training in a junior Scottish pipe band, which instilled a precise technical foundation that he later fused with rock influences from drummers such as Carl Palmer, Bill Bruford, Phil Collins, and John Bonham.

He joined Runrig in 1980 after a rapid preparation period, making his debut performance with the band in Glasgow that year and appearing on their album Recovery in 1981.

As a core member, Iain contributed to Runrig's distinctive blend of Celtic folk melodies, Gaelic lyrics, and rock energy across numerous studio albums, live recordings, and major concerts.

His steady presence helped sustain the group's musical integrity and popularity in Scotland and Europe throughout their 45-year career until their announced retirement in 2017 and farewell concerts in 2018.

Iain is an enthusiastic golfer and fly fisherman. He has described his experiences on the golf course as "doing battle with my own brain on the golf course as often as I can," adding that "that has to be the hardest game on the planet to master." When golf becomes too frustrating, he turns to fly fishing as a more relaxing alternative, noting it is "for when the golf clubs are chucked away in disgust and I require something more relaxing to do." Iain has also made light-hearted comments about his love of fishing, joking that he "formed my own party recently. It's called the Fishing Party, and all are welcome to join."
